Old Fashioned Taffy Pull

Taffy

Old-Fashioned Taffy Pull Tough to pull and great fun to make.

Ages: All Topic : Food Project Focus An old-fashioned taffy pull, although a bit messy, offers your family an evening of fun and memories. Remind young children that the taffy can be very hot when it is first pulled and that an adult should touch it first. Give your homemade taffy as a unique holiday gift, or eat it all yourselves!

Materials

• Sugar

• Light corn syrup

• Water

• Butter

• Cornstarch

• Salt

• Vanilla extract

• Liquid food coloring in your choice of color

• An 8" (20 cm) square pan, buttered

• A 2 quart (2 L) saucepan

• Scissors

• Waxed paper

Project Activity

#1 Gather all ingredients and equipment before you begin cooking. For your "Old-Fashioned Taffy Pull" you will need:

1 cup (1/4 L) granulated sugar

1/4 cup (.06 L) light corn syrup

2 tablespoons (15 mL) butter

2/3 cup (.16 L) water

1 teaspoon (5 mL) salt

1 tablespoon (15 mL) cornstarch

1 teaspoon (5 mL) vanilla

8 to 10 drops food coloring (your choice of color)

Butter (for greasing hands)

#2 Combine sugar, corn syrup, butter, water, salt, and cornstarch in a 2 quart (2 L) saucepan over medium heat. Mix well, then bring to a boil without stirring until it forms a hard ball when dropped from a spoon into a cup of cold water.

#3 Remove mixture from heat and stir in remaining ingredients of vanilla extract and food coloring of your choice.

#4 Pour into an 8" (20 cm) square buttered pan. Allow to sit until the taffy is cool enough to touch and handle.

#5 With clean, buttered hands, pull and fold the taffy until it is stiff and light in color.

#6 Cut taffy into small pieces and wrap in waxed paper.

#7 Place in a tin or gift bag to give to family and friends. This recipe makes a pound of taffy.
